The relatively unknown Northern Irish rockers got an incredible 32% of nearly 50,000 votes cast, proving industry insiders can’t predict who is the fans favourite!
They comfortably beat Adele- already a Brit winner who sits at number 2 in the charts- hot tip Duffy and a host of other major label artists to the prize.
MTV picked 28 new acts for 2008 and asked viewers to cast their votes for who they think is gonna breakthrough this year throughout January.
Rather than let music journalists or fabled ‘industry insiders’ decide the hottest artists for the new year we let the fans decide.
Alphabeat, Joe Lean And The Jing Jang Jong and Black Kids also made the Top 5.
