Jay-Z will be stepping down as Def Jam’s president. He’s been president of the label since 2005 and says he’s now ready to move on to other ventures. Under a separate long-term recording contract with Def Jam, Jay-Z still owes the label at least one or two more albums.
Universal said Carter, also top-selling rap artist Jay-Z, will continue recording for its Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam label. But the company did not give a reason for his decision to quit the executive suite.

Fifteen films have been announced for the long list for the Best Visual Effects Oscar at next year's Academy Awards. Those films are
Beowulf The Bourne Ultimatum Evan Almighty The Golden Compass Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix I Am Legend Live Free Or Die Hard National Treasure: Book Of Secrets Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End Ratatouille Spider-Man 3 Sunshine 300 Transformers The Water Horse
There are some names we're surprised to see in there, because they're not films you'd traditionally think of as effects movies. The Bourne Ultimatum used predominantly practical effects and the digital stuff was off the type where it's so good you don't notice it. Which makes them great effects, we suppose.
Ratatouille is also all animation, so you could argue it's all special effects. But we did want to eat all the food, so that's quite an achievement. It's good to see the Academy thinking a little laterally. Does this love for Ratatouille mean it could be in with a shot at Best Picture, rather than Best Animated Picture?
We're also pleased to see Sunshine there, given its budget wouldn't pay for catering on most of the list.
From the list, we'd have to give it to Transformers. Pirates 3 had some stunning effects, but they'd already been perfected for Pirates 2.
Private, whose 'My Secret Lover' is one of the best albums of 2007, have recently issued the video for their new single, 'Crucify My Heart'. The song itself is like a mid-80s disco funk rework of Madonna's 'Like A Prayer'* and the video features a gothtastic walk down a country lane.
Early today she was arrested in London, but not for drug possession. She was arrested on suspicion of attempting to interfere with the court case involving her husband, who is jailed and awaiting trial in the U.K. on assault charges. He has also been charged with trying to interfere with a witness in his assault case.
Rihanna has said she’ll never touch drugs or end up like Amy Winehouse because the star’s dad was a crack addict.
In an interview with The Mirror she talked about British diva Wino: “Amy clearly has a problem and it’s very difficult to get over. I should know.”
The Umbrella singer continues: “It’s so easy for people to judge but nobody knows what she’s going through. Drugs are powerful things and they take over your world.”
Rihanna’s father was a drug addict as she grew up although is now clean.

Kerry Katona: Crazy In Love takes you behind the headlines and into the home of our nation’s favourite northern lass, Kerry Katona.
MTV One brings you this no holds barred reality show, which sees Kerry and new hubby Mark Croft take over the Osbournes’ mantle to offer a zany, off-the-wall insight into their entertaining and extraordinary lives.
Following the young, loved-up couple from now until the birth of their fourth child in May, our cameras will follow Kerry as she launches her first novel and a brand new perfume.
In Kerry Katona: Crazy In Love’, the pair will lift the lid on life as a celebrity couple and will no doubt take the opportunity to answer some of their harshest critics.
The show launches February 17th 2008 @ 10pm on MTV One.
Rihanna has cancelled tonight’s live gig in Birmingham on “doctors orders”.
The NEC venue has released a statement saying they hope to reschedule the show and that the singer: "appreciates the love and support of all her fans.”
She has also pulled tomorrow's concert which was due to take place at Bournemouth's BIC venue.
Some of the public with tickets may be angry though. Just last week the 19 year old cancelled a gig in Nottingham hours before it was due to start.
And the Barbados born star has not given any explanation aside from using the phrase “under doctors orders.”
She's due to play Glasgow, Manchester and London later in the week. It's currently unknown if these shows will be affected.
To our mind, the teaser trailer for Doug Liman's Jumper had some terrific ideas and a nicely unglossy aesthetic. And the new full-length trailer, here, confirms our hope that this could be the surprise action hit of next year.
Its look and tone feel halfway between X-Men and the Bourne movies, which is a pretty nice place to be, filmically. Those would fit, since the movie is about a young man (Hayden Christensen) with freak powers of teleportation who finds himself pursued by a mysterious force, in the shape of Samuel L Jackson, looking a little like a less serene Mr Miyagi.
The storytelling in the trailer is still a little confusing (what exactly is it that Christensen's doing that is so terrible?), but that jumping effect is flawless and it looks like its being put to great action use. Liman's one of the most underrated action directors working today (yeah, we know some of you hated Mr and Mrs Smith) and we hope this maintains his winning streak.
He’s got a great new album, a beautiful girlfriend and his own business empire but reports suggest Jay Z won’t be head of a record label for much longer.
Jigga is currently CEO of Def Jam Records but his contract runs out at the end of this month and it may not be renewed.
According to the New York Daily News his demands were “excessive” considering he’s away from the office touring.
A source told them: “He wanted big, big money that was way out of sync with the realities of today's record business.”
The “Bruce Wayne of the game” released a new album American Gangster last month unexpectedly. He releases the horn heavy new single Roc Boys on December 17.
With Meg White's acute anxiety diagnosis from early this year, the L.A. Times talked to Jack White about many things, including whether the White Stripes would ever tour again.
"I don't know. It's a good question. I guess it's up to her (Meg)... She seems to be lively. She was really invigorating working together on this 'Conquest' record. I was wondering if she was interested, and she was completely - very, very involved.”
He said it wouldn't bother him if they went by the way of The Beatles, and focused entirely on studio work.
Of course, he always has The Raconteurs, or Bob Dylan as touring possibilities.
We could make some snarky comment about how any guy who chooses to watch this should beware of a sudden growth of ovaries, but we're not going to do that because we know a lot of people love this show.
This is just a teaser, so there's not a whole lot to comment on, but, will all those shots of Sarah Jessica Parker in a wedding dress, they're really trying to tease the possibility of Carrie getting married to that dude who looks like Sam The Eagle from The Muppet Show.
We have to say that this does seem to have made a good visual leap from TV to film, with much of this looking beautifully shot and impressively cinematic, rather than just like an extended episode.
Yes, the big-screen continuation of the popular sci-fi TV show (and sequel to 1998’s The X-Files Movie) starts shooting this month in Vancouver – and director Chris Carter has finally started adding new cast members to go along with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, returning as Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.
And one of the new cast members is none other than the Big Yin himself, Billy Connolly. He’ll join Amanda Peet and Xzibit (benefiting now that Oliver Stone’s Pinkville has been placed on hold because of the writers’ strike) on the movie.
No word yet on who exactly Connolly, Peet or Xzibit will be playing, but The Hollywood Reporter indicates that the latter two will be playing FBI agents (possibly partners for Mulder & Scully at the movie’s beginning? After all, it would make sense if their partnership had dissolved over the years).
Robbie Williams will rejoin Take That at some stage in the future, his mother has revealed.
The pop superstar has been linked with a one-off performance with the boy band ever since they reformed in 2005 and his mother Jan has now given the clearest indication yet that a reunion will happen, explaining that Robbie wants to do it.
"On the question of him doing something with them, I feel that will happen. It would be something he wanted to do.
"I'm thrilled that out of all the negative stuff that happened in the past, there's now something great happening.
"Take That were excellent when they were all together and they are excellent now", she told the Stoke Sentinel.

Kanye West received eight nominations for the 50th annual Grammy Awards on Thursday, leading a varied and surprise-filled pack.
Female singers were the talk of 2007, and Amy Winehouse received six nominations, four of which are in the top general categories. Winehouse is the only performer represented in album, record, song and best new artist.
Winehouse’s “Back to Black” will compete with the Foo Fighters “Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace”, Vince Gills’ “These Days,” Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters,” and West’s “Graduation” for album of the year.
The Foo Fighters are also up for record of the year; Rihanna’s “Umbrella” is up for record and song, and a year after Corinne Bailey Rae walked away empty handed after receiving three noms last year, she receives a song nomination from the album that was eligible last year.
The Grammy nominations were announced Thursday at the Music Box Theater in Hollywood. Awards will be handed out Feb. 10 in ceremonies at Staples Center.
Michael Jackson - Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition
No one knows for certain how broke or desperate Michael Jackson is, but serious efforts are under way to reignite his sagging career. Michael Jackson’s best selling album of all time, Thriller, originally released November 30, 1982, is being re-released in celebration of its 25th anniversary. Epic/Legacy is remixing a deluxe edition containing unreleased bonus tracks mixed by or featuring Kanye West, Akon, Will.I.Am and Jackson himself. The set will also house a DVD with Jackson’s Thriller short films, which have been digitally remastered - “Thriller,” “Beat It” and “Billie Jean” - as well as his Emmy-nominated performance of the latter song on 1983’s “Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever” TV special. And to top things off, it will also have an exclusive Jackson-penned greeting to his fans.
Meanwhile, the Jackson action actually starts in December when he releases a new single and launches a new global-marketing campaign. Also the Jackson Five is finally confirmed for a reunion tour in 2008. Even better, Jermaine Jackson confirmed to the BBC that Michael is onboard for this venture as well.

Gnarls Barkley plan to release their new album in spring of next year.
The band started working on the follow up to 2006's 'St Elsewhere' late last year.
Speaking about the album Danger Mouse told New York Times: "It sounds like we're more comfortable with each other and just as uncomfortable with everybody and everything else."
Big ol', happy ol' Al Roker of America's The Today Show went on set of The Dark Knight recently. This being The Today Show, a kind of US equivalent of This Morning with more handwaving and less Fern Britten, this is really beginners' stuff (Roker gives the impression of having no clue what happened in the first movie), but we do get interview snippets with Christian Bale, Christopher Nolan and Aaron Eckhart, plus a few clips of shooting, although we don't think there was any new finished footage there.
When it was rumoured last month that Christian Bale was in talks to play John Connor in McG's Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, many refused to believe that one of the most discerning actors around would affiliate himself with a sequel that few want to happen. But Variety has confirmed that the rumour is true.
Bale is in final negotiations to play a 30-something John Connor during the battle between humanity and Skynet. Very little is known of the story other than that, but there are now rumours that Connor may be only a supporting role in the movie, rather than the lead.
